Arrrr you looking for a winter city break that will keep the kids entertained? Somewhere slightly more unique to celebrate Christmas this year? Or perhaps duty calls and you’re heading to Liverpool on a business trip, but you want to know where’s best to let your hair down during the weekend? You’re in luck because this bustling city is one of the best places to visit - especially at Christmas. Days out in Liverpool are endless, there’s truly something to suit everyone’s tastes. Whether you’re with family, colleagues or that special someone, you certainly won’t be stuck for things to see and places to go. Here’s our ultimate winter itinerary for Liverpool Christmas 2019…

Liverpool Ice Festival

A great place for quality family time or an after-work social - believe us when we say the Liverpool Ice Festival, located in Pier Head, should be at the top of your Christmas itinerary. This year from the 9th November, the grandeur of the Liverpool Waterfront transforms into a beautifully festive and frosty winter wonderland packed with all the necessary activities for a fun day out.

From a spectacular ice rink to the UK’s largest Ice Slide, there are many reasons why arguably the festival is one of the best things to do in Liverpool around Christmas. Little ones will love the new children’s rollercoaster whilst adults will find more amusement at one of the three outdoor German-style bars. Did we mention that the country’s only Ice Jet ride, complete with an outstanding sound and light show, also holds a residency here? And that’s not all, there’s also traditional Christmas markets so you can be guaranteed to be leaving with a souvenir (even if it’s a Bailey’s Hot Chocolate or a German Bratwurst).

Christmas night out

When it comes to nightlife, Liverpool really can’t be beaten. Not only are the Liverpudlians some of the friendliest people you will ever meet, but the reasonably priced bars and endless cocktail concoctions all contribute towards a great recipe for a quality night out. In the city around Christmas? Then what better excuse to go out and celebrate! If you’re in charge of organising the Christmas work party this year, there’s a variety of alternative venues that will make this season one to remember. Your co-workers will love a night out at The Smugglers Cove, we’ve got a great line-up of festive live music throughout December to greatly complement our spectacular range of Christmas-themed cocktails. After a few tipples with us and perhaps a hearty dinner, lead your colleagues over to the Hot Water Comedy Club for the very best in live comedy, with special Christmas line-ups occurring seven days a week in the runup to the big day.

December isn’t just a time for office Christmas parties in Liverpool, there are a whole host of places that are also perfect for a cosy date night or a day out with the kids (probably not during the night-time, though).

Pantomime at the Everyman Theatre

What’s Christmas without a trip to the panto? To kickstart the season’s festivities, each year the Rock ‘n’ Roll Pantomime bring a side-splitting performance to Liverpool’s iconic Everyman Theatre. Making their return this year from 23rd November right through until the 18th January with Sleeping Beauty Bohemian Napsody, the show will feature well-known songs for you to singalong to at your hearts content. However, if pantomime isn’t really your thing then perhaps a musical adaption of the more heart-warming Christmas tale Miracle on 34th Street at their partner venue the Playhouse will be more to your theatrical taste.

These shows are always extremely popular amongst both locals and visitors who may be in Liverpool for work or with family, so be sure to secure your ticket before you go!

Liverpool Christmas lights switch-on

One of the biggest events in the city’s calendar is the Liverpool Christmas lights switch-on and whilst the official date for it this year is yet to be announced, the famous Liverpool ONE Christmas tree has been confirmed to make a return to the city for the fifth year running. Standing at an impressive height of 30 metres, it claims the title of the tallest Christmas tree in the UK. Well-renowned for marking the start of the most magical time of year, Liverpool’s Christmas tree will be radiating seasonal cheer as it lights up its surroundings once again from its position on Paradise Street all throughout December.

If you’re looking for things to do with the kids in Liverpool over Christmas, then this is a relaxing way to spend the evening when you need a break from a day of retail. Although it isn’t just families with young ones who flock to behold the beauty of the Christmas lights – it’s also an excellent idea for a cosy evening with friends or a romantic night out with that special someone. The city has plenty of superb transport links, but if you choose to travel by car there’s a Q-Park Liverpool located conveniently not too far away from the festivities.

Socialising, sight-seeing and Christmas shopping at Albert Dock

Liverpool’s popular Albert Dock, situated on the northwest coast of the UK, is a treasure trove with many unique things to do whilst you’re in the city. If it’s a quirky Christmas gift you’re after, there’s plenty of choice here from handmade leather satchels and luggage tags to gift hampers fit for foodies, and not to mention stocking-fillers galore. Amongst the Albert Dock shops there’s also music, museums and maritime history to immerse yourself in. The iconic quayside harbours world-class galleries and ever-changing unique exhibitions, making it well-worth a visit whilst you’re in the city.

If the Albert Dock does happen to be on your list of places to visit in Liverpool, stop by for some lunch at our very own Smugglers Cove. Whether you’re after a traditional roast dinner without the hassle of having to make it yourself, popping in to socialise with friends over a few festive tipples, or simply stopping by for the jolly atmosphere, we’ve got Christmas menus and drinks packages to feed your appetite. If you’re not in Liverpool this winter but you know someone who will be, and you want to give a present this year that’s a far cry from a pair of socks, then a Smugglers Cove gift card is a great alternative. Our venue offers a notoriously unique dining experience, book now for the upcoming holiday season and bring your friends, family or co-workers along for an unforgettable Christmas 2019 party or event.
